Surface texture is one of the most underappreciated aspects of vacuum formed component design — yet it has a significant influence on the appearance, feel, and performance of the finished part. Gloss Finish

A polished tool surface produces a high-gloss finish on the formed part. Gloss finishes are visually striking, easy to clean, and maximise the clarity of transparent materials such as PETG. They are ideal for retail packaging, display components, and any application where visual impact is a priority. However, gloss surfaces show fingerprints and minor scratches more readily than textured alternatives.

Matt and Satin Finishes

A bead-blasted or chemically etched tool surface produces a matt or satin finish that is more forgiving of handling marks and minor surface imperfections. Matt finishes are commonly used for consumer product housings, automotive interior components, and any application where a premium, understated aesthetic is required.

Textured Surfaces

Deliberate surface textures — from fine leather-grain patterns to coarser geometric textures — can be incorporated into the tool surface and transferred to every formed part. Texture improves grip, disguises minor surface variation, and can be used to replicate the appearance of other materials. Many high-quality consumer product housings use vacuum formed textured ABS to mimic the appearance of more expensive materials.

Material Contribution to Finish

The material itself also influences surface quality. Some materials, such as ABS, produce consistently smooth and paintable surfaces. Others, such as HIPS, may exhibit a slightly grainy appearance that is acceptable for some applications but not others. Material selection and tool finish work together to determine the final surface quality of the part.
