Vacuum Forming for Refrigeration and Cold Chain Packaging

The cold chain — the temperature-controlled logistics network that maintains food, pharmaceutical, and medical products within required temperature ranges from manufacturer to consumer — places specific and demanding requirements on the packaging used throughout it. Vacuum forming is central to cold chain packaging across multiple sectors, and the material and design decisions involved are shaped by the unique conditions of refrigerated and frozen storage and transport. At Jabro Games, we have experience producing vacuum formed components for cold chain applications.

Temperature Requirements and Material Selection

Cold chain packaging must maintain its structural integrity and protective function across a wide temperature range — from ambient during production and packing, through refrigerated or frozen storage at temperatures as low as -25°C or below, to room temperature during consumer purchase. Materials that become brittle at low temperatures are not suitable for frozen food packaging. Impact-modified grades of PET and polypropylene are commonly used because they maintain adequate toughness across the full temperature range of the cold chain.

Fresh Produce and MAP Packaging

Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) is used extensively for fresh produce, meat, and prepared meals to extend shelf life by controlling the gas composition within the sealed package. Vacuum formed trays form the base component of most MAP packaging — the product is placed in the tray, the atmosphere is modified, and a lidding film is heat-sealed across the top. Tray material must be compatible with the lidding film’s seal temperature and provide the required barrier properties to maintain the modified atmosphere.

Pharmaceutical Cold Chain

Pharmaceutical products — vaccines, biologics, and temperature-sensitive medications — require packaging that maintains product integrity through extreme and rapid temperature changes. Vacuum formed inserts in pharmaceutical transit packaging provide precise product location and thermal mass management, complementing the insulated outer packaging to maintain the required temperature profile throughout the distribution journey.

Hygiene and Cleanroom Compatibility

Food contact and pharmaceutical packaging must be produced under conditions that prevent contamination. This places requirements on the production environment, handling procedures, and packaging of finished components before despatch. At Jabro Games, our processes include appropriate hygiene controls for food contact applications, and we can discuss specific requirements for pharmaceutical-grade components.
